Submission Guidelines: Feral

Feral is Etopia Press’s paranormal romance imprint. As always, we’re looking for strong, alpha heroes; brave, savvy heroines; and untamed paranormal worlds brimming with danger, excitement, and passion. Shape-shifters and werewolves, vampires and witches, angels and demons, psychics and ghosts… if there’s another reality beyond ours, we want to see it. Feral heroes should be just that—wild, untamed, and most certainly on the prowl. But no matter how powerful they are, they’re powerless against the call of that one, special female. Conflict and drama are always at the root of Feral stories—the stakes are high, and nothing ever comes easy—especially when someone’s not quite human. These stories should be highly sensual, highly passionate, with lots of great love scenes that go beyond the ordinary. The tone can be dark and dramatic, or light and humorous, but at the heart of the story is a love that defies reality, and a world readers will want to visit again and again.

Feral Stories Should Have
  1. Lots of sexual tension and lots of conflict, which are tied in some way to the paranormal element.
  2. Steamy, heart-pounding love scenes, full of emotion and romance.
  3. Safe sex. If the characters have sex in “the real world,” they must use protection. If they’re living in an alternate reality, then the need for it will depend on how closely their world resembles ours (i.e. is there HIV and other STDs there? If so, wrap it up).
  4. Original, imaginative world-building, with consistent rules that feel “real” and logical
  5. Accurate, real-world details to balance the fantasy elements. If your character turns into a chipmunk, you should know how chipmunks look and behave (hint: we don’t really want stories about werechipmunks. Not unless you have a real talent for romantic comedy).
  6. Believable, likable characters—even in fantasy, character motivations have to feel real to the reader. Perhaps especially in fantasy.
  7. Lengths: Novellas/Novels 20,000 to 100,000 words
Stories May Not Contain
  1. All characters who have sex must be 18 years of age or older.
  2. Sex between characters under the age of 18.
  3. Unprotected sex in the “real world” or worlds where STDs exist.
  4. Rape for titillation (exploring it for literary reasons is ok, but rape is a crime, not a turn-on. Capture fantasy, dubious consent, etc. are OK.
